From what I've read, the patch looks for your Windows to be installed in drive C:. To be
exact, it looks for Hosts to be in one of the following paths:
Windows XP C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc
Windows 2K C:\WinNT\System32\Drivers\Etc
Win 98\ME C:\Windows
If it doesn't find the path above, it gives you an error message.
HOWEVER, If you have a Hosts file in the expected folder above, the patch replaces it -
bad, bad, bad.
If the patch finds the path above and no Hosts exist yet, it creates one. If your Windows
is in, e.g. G:\Windows and you happen to have a C:\Windows folder, the patch will deposit
Hosts in the C:\Windows folder, leading you to believe it was installed but then nothing
happens when you next run WinMX.
Instead of running patch, locate your Hosts file, check properties and remove the
"Read-only" attribute if ticked, open Hosts in Notepad, then copy and paste the
redirection lines (i.e. lines that read: GoToIPaddress DomainName) form that site's Hosts
(or from Vladd's site). Save Hosts and reapply the "Read-only" attribute. If no Hosts
exists, open Notepad, copy and paste the redirection lines and save it in the respective
folder according to your Windows version.
As always, scan .zip, .exe. files for virus before running them, even when from trusted
sites.
