Patch problems with route? Read this.

Just thought I'd point this out in case it helps anyone out.

If using a router, many people set up their Windows DNS settings for their
network card to use the router as a sort of DNS proxy server.

IOW, they let the router automatically get the DNS settings from the ISP,
and set the DNS in Windows to the address of the router, eg 192.168.0.1.

This works just fine, but with one problem it seems- Windows appears to
ignore the Hosts file, so the patch may not work at all. I cured this by
finding out the ISP's DNS server address (I just looked at my router's
settings) and setting Windows to use it directly;- problem solved.

I came across this idea when solving another problem- I had a hosts file
which was supposed to block popup ads by pointing undesirable addresses to
127.0.0.1 (loopback) but it never worked. Then I discovered that this is a
side effect of setting up the network connection to rely on the router for
DNS.

I hope this helps someone out.
