My 2¢ (worth every penny):
Of the three options you mention, only the dll patch (ws2_32.dll from
http://www.winmxgroup.com/) did the trick for me. I'm running Win2K on
a LAN behind a firewalled cable modem, so I can only make a secondary
connection. With a new HOSTS file and .WSX file (listing servers), but
no dll file, I could use OpenNap but found it combersome compared to
the usual Peer Network. However, when I put the dll patch in my WinMX
Program Files folder, I could connect to the Peer Network, but I can no
longer connect to any servers on OpenNap. All I get is a "Connection
time out" message for each server I try to connect to, but I'm happy
with the Peer Network. Folks are worried about the RIAA catching them
sharing files, and there are fewer Primary sites, so the total # of
files shared appears to be a lot less than it used to be.
