The _best_ way is the one that works for you and your friend. There
are many ways to do what you want.
E-mail is by far the easiest but you might have problems depending on
the size of the file. If your friend's ISP allows large files, go
ahead. You could also break it to smaller pieces with WinRAR and send
them seperately, taking care that you don't go over your friends
e-mail quota at any time.
FTP is made to do what you want. But one of you will have to setup an
FTP server and that is not straight forward. If you are going to do
this regularly, it is certainly a way to go. Serv-U is a server that
is very easy to setup, BulletProof FTP server is another popular one.
For client there are tons of options... FlashFXP is my favorite.
Most messaging applications (Yahoo! Messenger, Microsoft Messenger,
....) have a transfer file feature. I'm not sure if they can handle
"resume" in case the transfer gets cutoff for any reason. This could
be an issue if your on a connection that is not reliable (dialup) or
it's going to take a very long time to complete the transfer.
You can create an account on one of many sites that offer "Virtual
Drive Storage", upload it there and then have your friend login and
retrieve it. Xdrive comes to mind, there are others.
Sharing a folder across the Internet is possible with Windows and I
believe XP has a wizard to set this up. You could create a folder with
password access and your friend would just copy it as a normal file
from a folder. If you trust Microsoft to handle this, it's another
option you have.
You can post it to a binaries group (broken up in smaller pieces, use
WinRAR) and have your friend retrieve it. You will need a newsreader
client that handles binaries (Xnews or NewsMan Pro, for example).
Letsee, if you like a challenge you could stream it to him using
someting like VLC player. Video LAN Client can actually work as a
server and streamcast this through the internet. You can even use HTTP
and all your friend would have to do is use his browser pointed to
your IP. Post back if this works :-)
