Forget burning your compilations to another CD, and purchase a decent
mp3 player that supports playlists and VBR. Back-up your wav's on DVD
or external storage device i.e., Firelite.

Nero works fine for encoding to mp3. Use their PowerPack Lame Mp3
encoder or better yet use the mp3 Pro encoder plug-in, which is
significantly better than LAME. Use VBR encoding at 320kbps with the
highest encoding quality (0 on the Nero scale).

VBR mp3 is hardly "as good as it gets" The newer lossy codec (AAC)
will eventually replace it as this is the superior format.
