At the heart of the argument surrounding sharing music is the presumption
that the recording industry has a god given moral right to monopoly.
For tens of thousands perhaps hundreds of thousands or even millions of
years human beings have been creating music and freely sharing it and doing
so for the sheer joy of it, not with any intent to profit or extort labor
from their fellow man.
Then recording technology was invented, and in short order someone
desited they could profit by selling recordings of artists so people could
listen to music anytime they want.
And because recording devices were expensive and rare; it just seemed
natural to have to pay for these recordings.
Now, recording devices are cheap, anyone can buy a sound card and a
PC and a cd / dvd burner for a few hundred dollars and make digital
recordings or copies of recordings.
The multi-billion dollar recording industry which is used to ripping
off consumers and artists alike managed to get laws passed to give them a
legal monopoly on artist works.
Does this make thier action moral? Does it make making a copy of
something stealing? No it does not.
I have no problem with artists making money, they can perform and get
paid for their performance as they have always done.
The recording industry does not have a god given right and SHOULD NOT
have but does have a congress given right to profit by selling copies of
artists work.
But the even bigger bitch I have is that these bastards, in the interests
of profit, promote crap music and keep good artists who will not sign garbage
contracts off the airwaves and keep them from getting exposure.
And this is the REAL reason that the recording industry wants to kill all
P2P networks. They do not want REAL TALENTED ARTISTS from getting exposure.
Real talented artists won't sign the crap contracts that give the recording
companies the rights to their music for almost nothing.
If real talented artists get too much exposure, then it makes it more
difficult for the recording industry to promote and sell the crap from their
crap artists that will sign crap contracts. Then they might be forced to
actually PAY artists. That's what they're really afraid of.
Congress goes along with this in part because it also allows them to
keep artists with unfavorable political views from getting exposure.
You MUST fight for your rights, let your congress critter know that you
will NOT support the status quo. Boycot RIAA, ASCAP and BMI. Support
independent artists. Support artists by going to thier concerts. Do NOT
purchase anything from a label that is a member of RIAA, ASCAP, or BMI.
I am not suggesting anyone here break the law, on the contrary; don't.
It's perfectly legal to share music that artists allow to be shared. It's
perfectly legal to buy from independent labels and go to concerts. It's
perfectly legal NOT to buy from bastards.
It's also perfectly legal to let your congressman KNOW you do not find
this acceptable and will not vote for them if they support the recording
industries supression of artistic music and free expression.
