Choosing genre

Posted by Terry Pinnell on 10/14/05 14:24

I'm making (another!) assault on my disorganised music library.
Current task is assigning a Genre tag to those without one. I know
that categorising tracks is largely a matter of personal opinion, and
what you intend to do with the data.

My main hesitations arise when trying to choose between categories
that are *both* arguably valid, such as:

Pop and Rock, Pop and Vocal, Soul and Vocal, Jazz and Vocal, Jazz and
Soul, Instrumental and Jazz, Instrumental and Vocal, Jazz and Big
Band, Jazz and Blues, Blues and Vocal, etc

To be more specific, could I get a few opinions on what genre others
would assign to the following examples please? (Unless specified, I'm
assuming 'typical' tracks.)

Mantotovani
Roberta Flack: First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
Ink Spots
Judy Collins: Send in the Clowns
Sam Cooke: All The Way
Swingle Singers
Dinah Washington
Sarah Vaughan
Ella Fitzgerald
Frank Sinatra
Beatles: Hard Day's Night
Beatles: Yesterday
Marvin Gaye: Let's Get It On

What do others reckon is the very *minimum* useful set? I rather think
I could get away with:

Big band
Choral
Classical
Instrumental
Jazz
Pop
Rock (not sure I need that either!)
Soundtracks
Themes
Vocal - female
Vocal - male

Do others find any use for
Easy Listening
Romance
Blues
Dance
Oldies
Top 10, Top 20, etc
