I am on the verge of buying the Sony NWHD5 Silver mp3 player, to be honest
moreso for its looks than function. It has the style I like (aluminum
case). I have heard stories about it that worry me though, like digital
rights managment making it difficult to transfer songs to it? Can anybody
tell me good or bad points about this mp3 player?
I do own 99.9% legal music, just a few songs downloaded off various sites.
But I do own CDs that I could rip using the software to put on the Sony
mp3 player. But I heard you can only transfer songs to and from the
computer that you originally rip the music to?
Here is recent email from sony:
SonicStageT Version 3.1 software is Sony's latest music management system
for your digital music player. If you are currently using OpenMGT Jukebox
software or SonicStageT software 1.x/2.x/3.0, you'll want to upgrade now.
SonicStageT software is an application that allows you to access, manage and
transfer your digital music files. Key features of SonicStage Ver 3.1
include:
a.. Encode your CDs in ATRACT or MP3 format (new!)
b.. Burn Audio CD-R/RWs and ATRACT CD-R/RWs for personal use
c.. Integration of ConnectT music store - music downloads powered by Sony
d.. Improved user interface
e.. Elimination of check-out limits (previously in OpenMG Jukebox software
and SonicStage 1.x software)

I do not have a sony HD player but I have several of their MP3 CD players
and have been very please with the quality, finish, and sound. Appearance is
a huge consideration in gadget shopping. I think the transfer restrictions
you allude to was on their minidisk players.
