Most people find 128kb/s to be acceptable. Because I'm old, and my hearing
isn't the best, I find 64kb/s to be more than adequate. Indeed, with piano
music, I can get by with a 50:1 compression ratio using variable bit rate.
I tested it on several people, by recording a short piano piece using a
variety of coding schemes and burning them all to a CDR. Nobody could hear
any difference--even people with good hearing.
