"... the Department of Justice recently submitted to Congress a
"legislative package" aimed at toughening up intellectual-property
enforcement amid evolving technology.

"According to the proposal being circulated by the department, the
measure would create a new crime called "attempting to infringe a
copyright" and subject it to the same penalties as more serious
infringement offenses."

"Create a new crime."
Of course. Being as how all the old ones have been taken care of.

Although, I have to ask - what the hell constitutes "attempting to
infringe..."? Seems to be an infinite grey area subject to
interpretation, which can only be made worse once the lawyers get their
claws into it.

I do not for one minute believe that only "for profit" pirates and
counterfeiters will be targeted, since the P2P community has long been
tarred with the same brush as those who rightfully should be
prosecuted. It's this blurring of distinction between the two I find
troublesome.
