If you're asking about "normal" in terms of volume, these $1 a tune
sites are probably running dead last because their prices are ridiculous for
what they're actually selling and there are numerous hassles. They don't
just sell you the song. They sell you very limited use of the song.

It would be difficult to place CD sales in terms of volume, but they're
still ahead of the $1 a tune sites because there are generally fewer limits
on what you can do with the music you bought.

I suspect that the Russian sites, like www.allofmp3.com are selling a
higher volume than the buck a tune sites, but I could be wrong. The
advantages are that they sell MP3s, which do not have limits on what you can
do with them and lower price. They exist in a legal gray area in Russia.
They are not legal in many other countries because, despite what the website
says, they don't pay royalties to anyone. Do not give these guys your credit
card information.

After that in terms of volume is probably binary usenet groups.
Uploading copyright protected files without permission of the owner is
illegal many places.

Despite somewhere around 16,000 lawsuits in the US alone, P2P is
probably still the big Kahoona in terms of volume. The odds of being sued
are small, but if you are the likely minimum expense is $3,000. Some people
have paid more to get out of that mess. If anything the lawsuits have drawn
more people to P2P because it has grown tremendously since the lawsuits
started. http://www.slyck.com/ for more information on that one. You will
need to be better informed if you decide on this route.

Also in the mix are numerous legal free sites and a few sites selling
music from smaller record companies at something well under $1.
http://www.emusic.com/promo/home.html is a good example of this because
they're at least selling MP3s, so there is no digital rights management
attached to your files. There are also numerous scam sites offering
unlimited downloads of everything for a small one time or monthly fee.
