Didnt mess with mine. Automatically added all of my mp3s to the itunes
library but didnt cause any problems. As others have said, there is a
setting where you can either automatically update your library to iPOD every
time you connect it or you can do this manually. I have it set up to update
manually.

Yes, you can use it as a hard disk. There is a tickbox in the preferences
that allow this (think it is allowed as standard). Your mate will need to
have iTunes installed to recognise your iPOD and obviously you will want him
set up as manual update of the iPOD or you may find the empty library
over-writes your iPOD!
