Ah, there's the problem, many newsreaders will actually show the word between
the slashes in italics and the word between the underscores as underlined,
also a word between asterics in bold. People using them don't have to infer
the meaning. If your newsreader doesn't show them like that then yes, anyone
from a typographical background would infer that a word between underscores
was meant to be italicised.
