The latest version allowed me to specify compression ratio (44)
but the quality was poor. Or I could specify mono. Doing both
at the same time crashed it.

I ended up using 'sox' to turn stereo into mono,
then 'lame' to get a compression ratio of 22
(since the mono is half the size of the stereo).
Quality is indistinguishable from the original.

Apparently, no compromise was required. Ratio of 44 gets the entire
book on one CD with no discernible difference in quality. In fact,
I think it leaves more than enough room for the text and maybe even
a viewer to synch display with sound. :-)
