My wife records research data on an audio recorder. While she's out
collecting more data, she wants me to convert her existing data to mp3 (so
she can listen on her mp3 player), with a few special requirements.
First, since it is "continuous" audio recording, she wants me to break it
up into sections of maybe 10-15 minute chunks so that she can easily re-
find things she needs to listen to again. I have an additional requirement
of not having to sit at my PC while all this happens, so I'm interested in
any software that can automatically take an incoming audio stream and chunk
it up for me (e.g. start a new file every x minutes). Ideally, the software
would chunk it during dead space/silence within +/- 30 seconds or so of the
target length of the clip, but maybe that is asking too much? Also, since I
know the tape length (90 minutes) I'd like to be able to set the software
to quit recording after 90 minutes, so it doesn't continue to make mp3s out
of dead air time.
I already have a PC with audio in, and a plug connector that fits a tape
player audio out to my PC-in jack, so I think my hardware is good, I just
need the software now.
As ancient as it is, my PC still runs Win98SE, so I'd need to stay
compatible (although feel free to recommend higher products as well, maybe
this will be my rationale to upgrade). I also prefer relatively inexpensive
programs, as she doesn't have any grants so we aren't going to be paying
hundreds of dollars to do this.
I appreciate any and all suggestions!
Thanks in advance,
Keith
