Thanks for the replies. I guess I'm also wondering if CDex's interface
settings differ at all from the true LAME alt preset standard settings. In
other words, I you simply type -alt preset standard on a LAME command line,
what would the range of encoding rates be? Is the whole range possible (0 -
320), or is it 128 - 320, which is what shows up on the CDex interface if
you select preset standard and leave everything alone.

Fred, I have seen the 170 - 210 range suggestion at that website, and I'm
sure that would yield a file size closer to an average of 192. I'll try
that as well and see what I get. I was just under the impression at first
that simply stating preset standard and letting the encoder do its thing
would also yield a similar file size, based on what I had read. But perhaps
my larger file size is due to CDex's default range of 128 - 320, which is
not the true preset standard range.

I'm also starting to get the feeling that using CDex's interface might be a
bit limiting, compared to using actual command lines. For instance, if I
wanted to use preset standard, but also use stereo instead of joint stereo,
that can probably be done with an actual command line, but not with CDex (to
use stereo in CDex, you have to select a q setting for quality, rather than
one of the presets).

Anyway, thanks again.

Greg
