I suspect you're right. The reason people bought massive quantities of
DVDs was because they weren't happy with the quality of VHS or the cost
of Laserdisc.
I plan on looking at the HD players, but if the quality of the releases
isn't appreciably better than DVD there will be no real reason to
switch. I also think it's interesting that TV shows on DVD are really
big sellers, because HD-DVD doesn't benefit old TV shows at all. The
only possible benefit would be being able to reduce the number of discs
involved. In the end though they will be limited by what people are
willing to pay.
We'll reach a point where it will be possible to put an entire season
of a TV show on a single disc, but will people be willing to pay $100
for a single disc?
