--alt-preset standard is indeed improved in 3.97. Thanks to some
improvements, the LAME devs decided it would be safe to remove the
128kbps minimum bitrate from --alt-preset standard. The minimum bitrate
is now 32kbps. You will get at least the same quality as before but with
some savings in filesize.
The Alt Presets are now integrated as default settings. So instead of
typing --alt-preset standard, you can type -V2.
