doorstep or tell you to go to the Post Office to pay and pick up your

Applies to anything over £18 sent from outside the EU (and any other
territories we may have the same agreement with, I suppose).
Well, that's the idea. Some things can slip through Customs and arrive
without charges, but it's best not to hope that happens.
Have you really not imported anything before? How... quaint.
