Also another very important factor: Most people rented VHS instead of
purchasing. I mean hell, most new release VHS titles were priced for
rental anyway($100 smackers for a tape!). I know some people who never
bought a single pre-recorded VHS tape during the entire formats run. I
think it's safe to say a good 70% or more of general consumers didn't
start buying movies until the 'collectable' and priced-to-own DVD format
hit the scene... Now that all these people have already purchased all of
these movies on a format they were led to believe would last them a
lifetime and never need replacing will simply have no desire to buy the
same movies on another variation of the DVD format simply so they can
have a higher-resolution version of the same film...

More like $50, which is the average price of a 6 disc season. I doubt
most people would be willing to pay even that for a single disc that
costs all of 80 cents to manufacture.
