OK, writer arrived today...
Using Datawrite red DVD-R 8x media, the burns are *painfully* slow - I
even swapped the drive from my machine into my wifes' Dell to see if
that was any better (i've since discovered it isn't).
Its taking in the region of 40+ mins for a burn, which I assume is
around 2x - any suggestions ? (and christ almighty, dvdshrink takes ages
to rip the data !). DVDShrink reports the burn being done at 8x, but
most reviews indicate this should happen in a much shorter timeframe
than I seem to be getting.
(it was about the same in both machines - I suspected mine was crap for
throughput for a while, with it struggling at 16x or higher burning
CDRs, but I expected more from the Dell, which is less than 12 months
old)
AFAIK DMA is set "on" in both machines, and the drives are on auto
detect (jumpers swapped to CSEL when I installed it in the Dell box)
For what its worth, my machine was used to do a simple data DVD of
around 4Gb within Nero 6.6.x.x, the other machine was using DVDShrink to
make a backup of one of my wifes' favourite movies.
