This might be too simple, but is the dvd two sided? Meaning one side has a
widescreen version and the other a fullscreen version?

If not, check to see if either the monitor or dvd player has a "zoom"
feature engaged.

Otherwise, it's possible that the dvd is not anamorphic even though it's
matted to 16:9 and your monitor or dvd player has a forced 16:9 setting that
can easily be changed. Does a non-letterboxed , "standard"aspect ratio dvd
have black bars on all four sides when shown on your tv?
