Is the DVD "enhanced for widescreen TVs" or some such indication?
Some DVDs have the letterboxing "built in"--they're not anamorphic.

Also, many movies have an aspect ratio much wider than the 16:9 of a
widescreen TV. These will have black bars on the top and bottom of the
picture even if they are anamorphic or enhanced for widescreen TVs.

There is no communication from the TV to the DVD player.

Common settings:
DVD player: 16:9 or WS
With an anamorphic DVD this will produce a 4:3 picture that is "squished"
horizontally--everyone will look too thin until you set your TV to "full"
or some other setting that pulls the picture horizontally to fill the
screen.

If the DVD is not anamorphic, you will always get a 4:3 letterboxed
picture. You then will have to use one of your TV's Zoom settings to fit
the picture to the screen.
