The reason for that is that the standard definition resolutions (720 x
576, 720 x 480) support both 4:3 and 16:9 video. However, there is no
4:3 standard for high-definition video - it's all 16:9. So your player
and display are performing exactly as intended if you have it
outputting HD! I suppose if it was clever it would automatically
pillarbox 4:3 material into the 16:9 frame.
