Though some of you might find this of interest - especially those of us
gripped just now by S2 of Lost.
Out of curiosity, I dabbled in some of the new shows which premiered on
American tv over the past 2-3 weeks. It's a good time if you're into scifi
or spooky shows, although it was a pain in the arse how many focus on a
plucky-and-brainy-but-beautiful leading female character:
"Invasion"
....of the bodysnatchers variety. Bit predictable, but held my interest. Hard
to say if the format can be sustained without turning into Quinn Martin's
"the Invaders".
"Surface"
Invasion......of the aquatic variety. Funny sea creature sightings around
the US coast suggest a mounting global threat. High production values, but
for some odd reason, the sprawling storyline & characters annoyed the hell
out of me...as if they're trying to appeal to every demographic/age group in
a predictable way.
"Night Stalker"
A modernised version of the old Kolchak: The Night Stalker series. Very
formulaic & they've taken away Kolchak's trademark cheeky whistle, pork pie
hat & seersucker suit. Like The X-Files without flashlights & Mulder on his
mobile.
"Threshold"
Invasion........of the gripping variety. The first 10 minutes didn't look
promising. The next 10 hinted at a "Sphere" rip-off. Then it became much
eerier & more aligned with "Event Horizon" than anything. Great cast,
terrific dialogue (David Goyer), snazzy direction. This year's
Lost....except that Lost is still this year's Lost. Hell, you know what I
mean.
Still to review "Supernatural", "Killer Instinct", "Head Cases", "Criminal
Minds" & all the other "CSI"/"House" copycat shows.....
