Have a look on the back of your DVD player you will find a sticker with a
picture of the globe and the number 2, that is if you have bought your DVD
player in the UK, as the UK is in Europe and Europe is region 2, the disc you
need to buy needs to be either region 2 or 0 (all). Have a look at your
current DVD collection on the rear cover, it will also show you a region 2
logo.

Many many people hack their player so they will play DVDs for any region,
region 1 discs (North America) are often cheaper than region 2 and are
available many many months before region 1 often whilst still on the cinema in
the UK.
