There were indeed rumours that Ron Glass was one of the last to sign as
he was busy with other things. Book's death was at least partly (along
with the slaughter of the people in the settlement he lived in)
responsible for Mal deciding to quit running and face his problems head on.

Wash's death has caused a lot of arguments on the official Serenity
movie board (most of which have degenerated into some really pathetic
posts). Some see his death as cheap. I think the manner of it is as much
to blame as anything.

The death served the purpose of raising the stakes for the final battle
with the reavers. Did you fear that most of the crew were going to die
in that battle? I know that I did (and I was spoiled for his death
unfortunately, and I think Wash's death was largely responsible for
this. One character had died, and I suspect a lot of the audience
figured that Whedon wouldn't kill two of his beloved crew in the first
movie of what he hopes to be a trilogy. When Wash is killed, most would
have been thinking 'shit, anyone could die now!'.

A second reason for the death is the reputation the series built up for
the reavers. They were seen as lethal killing machines. If the whole
crew had survived the reaver attack people may ask how they got such a
reputation. I think it made sense that the reavers were responsible for
killing at least one of the crew.

As for the manner of the death, I loved it. One of the great shock movie
deaths. You are busy laughing at him repeating the 'leaf on the wind'
line and thinking they are safe for a while at least when BAM! Dead. No
corny last words for his wife. Shocking and brilliant.

There is a special Serenity magazine available (I picked up a copy in WH
Smiths). In an interview for that Alan Tudyk reveals that he liked
Wash's fate and agreed with it. He said that when they made the show he
told Joss that Wash would make a great sympathy kill in the second
season. As the movie is kind of a condensed version of the second
season, it is likely the character would have died anyway.

Joss Whedon has a habit of killing off popular characters in his shows,
so I wasn't surprised when he did it in his first movie. He does it to
keep the audience on their toes and stop them from thinking everyone is
safe. Personally I'll miss both Book and Wash if we ever see anymore of
the Firefly 'verse, but I certainly understand why they both died, and
think it helped to make a great movie. Who wants the 'The A-Team In
Space' where no-one ever dies or gets badly injured? It would take away
the fear and suspense from that final battle.

Joss has stated that if he gets to make a sequel he intends both Ron
Glass and Alan Tudyk to be in it. I guess it would be in the form of
flashbacks (perhaps a sequel where we get to see Book's past revealed?).
However he does it, I hope it's done in a tasteful and believable way.

Sorry for going on so long. Hope this is of some interest!

Jason.
