Exactly right - when you change channel the device records up to 2
hours of past input into a buffer. It can then be rewound and replayed
like any other recording.

On the Humax machines you can rewind to the point at which you changed
to the current channel or the maximum buffer length, whichever is the
smaller. With the Humax you do not have to tell it to record live TV -
it does it automatically.

The buffer gets deleted automatically when you change channel or turn
the device off.

Some machines allow you to save the buffer to a file for replay later.

So, for example, if you switch to your HDD or DVD-RAM recorder which
has been tuned to channel 4 halfway through a programme, and decide
that you would like to have recorded it from the beginning, you can (in
theory) rewind to the start and press the instant record button.

I don't know if this works for every DVD-RAM or HDD device, though.
