Funnily enough, using spoiler space would actually have
been the polite thing to do.

What broadcasters do is of no relevance given that, and
this might come as a bit of a surprise suggestion with
this being a DVD newsgroup, I will probably buy the R1
DVDs before it gets broadcast here.

Problem is, there is certain information you have given
that will provide a major clue when the episode is
broadcast.

No, I won't.
What *will* happen is that I'll have forgotten about
this conversation by (say) next week assuming it's not
ongoing then.
But when I come to watch the episode in question, I'll
recognise events based on what's been said here and then
I'll recall the spoiler. That, unfortunately, is the way
my memory works - probably a lot of other people's as
well.

Why would I worry about something I've already seen?
For the record, I'll describe how that episode will pan
out for me - after some spoiler space which, for the
benefit of other people reading this, is for Lost S2:

First of all, you've said (in the context of the episode
and this spoiler) that Hurley is safe. Now I know that
any predicament Hurley gets in as the series progresses
isn't going to lead to his demise - which ruins (aka
spoils) any potential suspense there. Only /after/ the
episode in question does that change.
Second of all, you said that the person affected in the
episode /deserved/ it, "acting like that when quite
clearly told to be quiet".
And *that* is when the memory of your post will come
flooding back. If the event in question happens almost
immediately, not quite so bad - but the suspense is
gone, because even if something happens more or less
immediately, I'll know who it's going to happen *to*.
Had you not said anything, sure, it would be fairly
obvious when I watch it that something was going to
happen - but it might not necessarily have been to
that person. Their actions might just as easily have
caused something to happen to someone else.
You have, as I said, spoiled that episode for me.
