Glad someone else had the same problem I did. Turns out we were both
being dumb ;)

Press the setup button, go to Audio, and set the output to Stereo Mix.
As default it tries to output as 5.1. I'm guessing, like me, you're
just playing them through a TV. The way the DVD outputs 5.1 to the TV,
it uses the speakers in it as satellite speakers, which generally don't
contain the dialogue.

Confusing I know! I'm guessing it would work fine on DVDs that only
have a stereo (2 channel) mix on them.
