"How big is the data you need to store ?
When I run my backups at work onto DVD-R, I make five copies.."

The size varies by quite a bit. Really it's not data we want to
store. It's system backups. In one case we have 25 workstations
that may only differ in computer name and address. Presently
we have a backup/restore policy which includes loading a generic
image from CD, and then making the few slight alterations
required. Since the restore may be done by non-IT personnel,
it needs to be as simple as possible. For this example, having
an image of every workstation on one DVD and a menu based
restore procedure would be the goal.

Other systems are in the range of 2 or 3 GB and restoring
from CD is just cumbersome.

Incidently, we use image backup/restore . For this task we
are not interested in individual file restore.

I have written whole DVD-Rs of data and read them successfully
months later on my own NEC3500 drive. My concern is more
at the correctable error level. Did the error rate increase but
not sufficiently to overwhelm the error-correcting bits? In other
words, is my backup becoming closer to no-good, or did it
stay just fine? We can't go down this road only to discover
in six months that ALL our backups are not usable. We need
to have confidence that they are 100%. And, as I see it, testing
at the byte/row level is the only way to determine this.

One more thing I'd like to throw in. We don't want to be caught
with compatibility issues, so I'd like to demonstrate the difference
between various writers.
