There's a host of good ones now, and at the current prices they're all good
value for money. I've owned the LG 4143 (now replaced by the 4147) and the
Pioneer 110. The advantage with the Pioneer is that there is better disk
support for 16X writing, and there are regular firmware updates, which you
will not find with other brands. Both are excellent writers. Of course the
current NEC model is also very good.
