hmmmm. since i posted my earlier response i got to talk to sony and also
did some research on the HDV vs HDcam issue. the Z1U records HDcam format
but uses a miniDV tape. this file format (HDcam) is normally found on much
more expensive cameras, all of which are on a regular sized DV tape (about
the physical size of a betamax tape only just a tad smaller).
this means, that the Z1U produces a HDcam file that is normally on a full
sized DV tape but in this case on the miniDV tape platform AND unless i'm
missing something that spells a somewhat queer arrangement. that is, it's
kinda in between with it's cool HDcam file format like in all high end pro
cameras but that pro file is in a bastard tape platform for that kind of
file. thus, one has to do the reading through their camera and can't really
pass it around. does this sound right?
