Doc
it's a pretty subjective question---
Set up an old BVP 5 /Bvv1 Oxide betacam side by side with a DVX 100A
and when properly lit and white balanced you will get good results with both
The broadcast engineer in me makes me "like" even the old BVP 5's picture
quality
just a little bit more---- however I LOVE my 100A and when used properly it
has
an awesome picure. What's great about the 100A is the real cinema looking
Gamma
tweeks that give awesome blacks and midtones and can really effect the
warmth of
your shot. 16 x 9 cuts off the top and the bottom of the frame to be sure,
but it has
its uses...24P is pretty cool, and you can't beat the number of tweeks and
adjustments you can create/destroy a good shot with
The 100A loves magic light like no other camera I've seen and it also digs
neon lights and cityscapes
You could buy 5 100A's for the price of what one new betacam used to cost,
but that betacam could take more of a beating and used to be guaranteed to
WORK
under almost any conditions. Plus most could be genlocked into almost any
system --a box for the 100A genlock will cost you a couple grand each---
It's a tough decision really, The 100A won't last you as long that's for
sure, but then
you could just buy a new one once it wears out.
somewhere on the web is a page that tells how many tv shows use 100A's ---
and
there are DOZENS --- but most times are used as second unit cams with
VARI-Cams being the major AXE
