From one technophobe to another (I'm much better now :)
First of all, reputable or not, the company you are dealing with is going to
sell you what they are authorized to sell. If there is something better out
there and they are not licensed to sell it, do you think they are going to
tell you? Maybe, maybe not.
Anyway, Avid Xpress DV will be more than enough, from what you are saying.
I am not familiar with ULead DVD Workshop, but Sonic is pretty much the
standard.
Now I edit with Avid on a PC, so this is not a bias, but if in your shoes I
would consider a Mac. It will come with iMovie and iDVD and, again from
what you are saying, those can do some nice projects and the learning curve
is minimal (unlike AVid). Then if you want to step up from there, Final Cut
Pro and DVD Studio Pro are top notch softwares that you can acquire. In
fact I use DVD Studio Pro for my DVD authoring, though I have a couple of
others on the PC. Well actually, there is Avid Xpress DV for Mac too (as
well Xpress Pro).
