Hi Alec,
Personally, I would recommend one of two routes...
1) Windows Movie Maker which is already on XP and I think is brilliant - so
easy to use, and professional results. It is not a DVD making package
though, so if you want to eventually put your creations on to DVD for you
and others to watch then you will require an additional software package.
You would capture the footage from your JVC in to Movie Maker, edit it as
much as you want then save it as an .avi file which another program could
then import and turn out as a DVD.
Alternatively, if you don't want to do this in 2 separate steps you could
buy any number of software packages that do it all. Recently, I have tried
VideoStudio9, Nero 6 Reloaded, Pinnacle Studio 10, and a few others. The
best BY FAR that I have found is Magix Movie Edit Pro 10 Plus (released
fairly recently). It has so many features, but the best thing of all is that
it never crashes. So many of these software titles made my PC extremely
unstable and if the task got too much then it would just hang, and I'd be
Ctrl-Alt-Del every 20 minutes. Magix never does this.
Also, the support has been outstanding. I can't work out how to do something
and they e-mailed me back within hours and have since replied several times
and gone out of their way to work out why I can't use particular mp3s as
background tracks.
I got Magix for 37 inc postage from Ebay. Brand new, 2 days delivery.
Perfect!
Hope this helps, and good luck with it all. It's hard, time consuming and
frustrating at times... but the results are well worth it!
Rachel
