Short of a total Windows XP reinstall --- which I do once or twice a
year --- move to another media player. When I've had this problem with
Windows Media Player in the past I just download and install
the free DIVX media player and it plays all my .Avi's and loaded codecs
flawlessly. Nero's Media Player works well too
This has happened to friends' Win 98 systems as well ---- it's been a
problem for years
