Are you describing a situation where the audio winds up LEADING the video?

Could it be that the Sony has a sample rate of 44.1 on the audio, but
the playback of the recording made via firewire plays the audio back
at 48 kbps (kilobits per second)? If so, it will play back faster than
it was recorded! You see where this goes?

Good job finding a possible solution. You did mean "MPEG" format, yes?
