It seems well within the realm of possibility to me.

They do (or DV wouldn't work at all.) Note that there isn't any
linear sync track (like with older helical-scan formats). But the
auto-tracking doesn't have enough latitude to handle out-of-spec
tapes or tape transport mechanisms which are out of alignment.
