Seems to me that selecting the appropriate display hardware/
software is the first question, and selecting the commplimentary
storage format is the second. Once you have established those,
selecting an editing solution should be much simpler.

Is there some special reason to use a computer to play the video
clips (as contrasted with a conventional DVD player)? A simple
DVD player would be *MUCH* more suitable for an application
like this unless there is some other mitigating condition you didn't
mention.
