It's obvious that it's the headphone jack. The contacts are loose: one 
channel doesn't work with the plug all the way in, but does when the 
jack is halfway out. If I could do it myself, I'm sure ordering a new 
jack from Sony would be less expensive than the cost of a pair of 
amplified headphones. Let me rephrase my question. How does taking 
apart a prosumer camera like the PD170 compare to taking apart 
something like a Sony TRV900, which I've done successfully? Sending it 
in to Sony would be a bad idea in my opinion. Their flat rate probably 
isn't any less than $250; most electronics shops could fix it for much 
less than that, even with a hefty minimum bench fee of $150, say.
