Showtime and the other broadcasters do an excellent job balancing the tonal
balance of the motion pictures they present.
However, I observe DVDs are most often too contrasty. Sometimes faces are
washed out and the shadows go to black. Black is absolutely black and
white is absolutely white and the graduations in between are too steep for
my taste.
I know the trend in movie making has been for higher contrast lighting. In
the early days of color cinematography, lighting was very flat, about 2 or
3:1. Today, anything goes. Could it be that films made that way show
better by projection than when viewed on the t.v. from the DVD transfer.
I think the transfers could be made softer and the results more pleasing
for playing at home on a television set.
