Sony HDR-HC1E - compatible with old DV tapes?

Posted by Peter on 12/26/05 18:34

Hi,

I am looking at getting the above camcorder.

I have used various DV cams e.g. a Sony PC100 and later a Canon
something...70 3-CCD model. The DV tapes appear interchangeable.

Is this really true for all DV cams?

For example I briefly used a TRV900 which had a feature called
progressive scan. AIUI this means the scan is not interlaced. I know
what this means (I used to design CRT monitors many years ago) but
wonder if it really affects the tape format. I think the ex-TRV900
tapes played back OK in the PC100.

There is also the 16:9 issue. The PC100 can do 16:9 but I've never
used it and anyway I think it just cuts down the # of lines to create
a "letterbox" effect, whereas the HDR-HC1E records (I think) longer
lines.

I also use a Pinnacle-8 video transfer program for Firewire transfers,
for occassional video editing. Does this accept all these formats? I
think it does.

Instead of the HDR-HC1E I might get a used TRV-950; the TRV900 had
fantastic video quality.

I would appreciate any info.
