Nappy,
I would very much appreciate knowing which part of my claim is incredible. I
am not attempting to claim that anything is magical or that HDV is somehow
vastly different. My only point is that HDV is extremely stressing of
hardware, and that performance of many extremely capable platforms including
dual processor G5s, dual Xeons, etc. in HDV editing and rendering is
painfully slow. The performance issue is often glossed over by the software
developers and leaves the false impression that HDV can be edited without
major computer upgrades. Certainly Final Cut Pro Studio and Vegas fall into
this category. Scrubbing the time line or rendering are slow enough that
many users are very unhappy with performance.
I exchanged a series of emails with Jan Ozer who published a recent and very
comprehensive 4-part evaluation of the leading NLE editors for HDV in
eventDV Magazine over the last 4 months, seeking his impressions of
performance and speed issues in particular. He shares your belief (as do I)
that Ulead's Video Studio 0 product is indeed an amateur versus professional
product, and this is certainly apparent by both its' price and limited
feature set. He pointed out that Ulead's Media Studio Pro, on the other
hand, uses the same HDV plugins, and may be, in fact, the sweet spot for
both speed and features. I have yet to go that route, but imagine it may be
a reasonable step-up for those who are impressed greatly with VS( speed and
want to add more features.
I disagree with your statement that working with HDV is "messy and slow, and
working with it sucks.". I would be especially interested in knowing what
tools you have tried, and how they have failed to perform.
Thanks,
Smarty
