Liquid 7 ROCKS! Keep in mind that unlike other NLEs at this time,
Liquid utilizes both CPU and GPU power. This is especially critical
for HDV editing. In order to handle 1080i, you must have a 256 meg
graphics card. I've had extrensive talks with the product managers and
they all tell me that ATI cards give superior performance with Liquid.
This is for 3 reasons:
1) Back 5 years ago Pinnacle (Avid purchased Pinnacle last year) and
ATI started working together on the concept of graphics generated
real-time editing effects. The first runa t it was the Pro-One card.
The concept was proven, the card wasn't that successful.
2) Pinnacle purchased Fast for the Edition NLE (which became Liquid).
The Pro vcersion of Liquid included a specially modified ATI graphics
card which delivered real-time graphics effects and real-time analog
output fromt he timeline.
3) Avid/Pinnacle/Fast engineers continue working on Liquid and making
it better than ever. With version 6.0 they make the GPU independent.
No special hardware required. Any graphics card will work. At the same
time, the ATI folks keep optimizing their drivers for this technology
as well.
The head start combined with the continued developement & co-operation
of both companies is why ATI card deliver more performance in Liquid
today.
CPUs - Liquid has been dual processor and hyperthreaded since version
5.x. For this reason we are recommending dual core processors for
Liquid. Until we have 64 bit optimized software there will be no
benefit of 64 bit CPUs. AMD vs Intel for Liquid is a non issue. Both
will work great. We're in the process of putting together our DIY4
article which will include both an AMD & Intel dual core machine. We
hope to have it done by month end.
