A review of MCE 2005 says that it respects a broadcast flag which if
present will prevent time shifting or recording of the program.
So the software may be operating as designed and the broadcaster is
restricting copying which is their right.
There also seem to be some issues about recording HD content.
You have not said what software. I am unaware of any media that can
keep track of install attempts itself. There must be a registry entry
of file on the PC which is being used to track installs.
If the software purchase agreement specifies a limited number of
installs then regretably you are out of luck and need to buy the
software again.
Since I am a software developer I get a statement from any software
vendor to confirm the policy on registration because I sometimes need
to reload a system a couple of times a week. So far I have had no
problems with any vendor.
