which Sony HandyCam do you have? I thought I would try digital over my
Sony Hi8 - so I jumped ship and ended up with a JVC mini-DV model that I
quickly returned. The JVC would only recognize USB for Motion JPEG's and
not for any DV - needed to use the s-video or Firewire.
The first thing you need to do is learn if sound can be carried over the
USB connection. On my Sony Hi8 - the S-video jack is vastly superior for
video than the composite out cable - but sound is only carried via the
composite cable - so both need to be connected when I capture - choosng
S-video for video and line-in from the composite connection for the
audio.
If you have a Firewire port on the Camcorder - then by all means obtain a
firewire card and cable to connect that way - which as suggested will
carry the audio mixed with the video. But honestly it will matter little
- as most Handycams only capture Audio at 12hz or 16hz stereo (if you
want to call it that) - so the sound really will not matter that much
anyway. If you need to play with the sound after capture - mthen use The
Composite out line to the audio-in line and capture the video via USB -
so that you will have a stream that VirtualDub-MPEG2 can edit for free -
it cannot handle DV audio/video streams.
best let you go - if this not helpful - please give info on exact model
of your Sony so I can be more help.
thanks,
cya
