Can't comment on LG DVD Burners of before the LG 4082 model as I've
only used the LG 4082, LG 4163 and LG 4167 drives. The burns from the
LG 4082 still work fine. I think that model is at least a year old by
now. I tend to update to each new firmware as they come out for better
burns to the faster speed media.
The big advantage for the LG's is they can use DVD-RAM which is a
fantastic format for DATA backing up or for uploading .VRO files from
a Panasonic DMR Recorder which is what I tend to use it for. They I
can delete the files and place it back in my E30 recorder for more
recording.
The NEC 3540A is a very good drive as well. I'm sure you will be happy
with it.
