Dunno Bob, it was released only a month or so ago - is free of riplock, can
use DVD-RAM(5x/5x)

From NEC:

In addition, all components of the ND-3550 are "lead-free" and therefore
already comply with the statutory recycling standards of tomorrow (coming
into effect on Jan 1, 2006).

This is the only difference between the 3540 and the 3550.
