 At one time Sony was very good about backwards compatibility. When they
 came out with Hi-8, those machines could also read regular 8mm. Their
 early D8 models (most, or maybe all)  also could convert 8mm or hi-8.
 The reason I went D8 instead of miniDV was a huge number or previously
 recorded hi-8s. But, with the demand for cheaper camcorders, only the
 more expensive recent Sony models have the capability.
